Students from Fountain-Fort Carson High School's Construction and Geometry in Construction classes are teaming up with the City of Fountain to refurbish a historic Tuberculosis hut.

The TB hut is located across from Aragon Elementary next to the library. These huts are a significant piece of local history, once used in the fight against tuberculosis in the Springs and Fountain area.

This project offers students a unique hands-on opportunity to apply their construction skills, learn about community preservation, and connect with Fountain’s history in a meaningful way.

"This was a super, duper cool opportunity because I get to explore all sorts of different careers and see if I really want to go into construction," said Junior Daisey Garman.

"It gives us an experience, like and we'll always remember this for the rest of our life," said Senior Colin Kelly. "We can put this on our resume for going into apprentice fields like carpentry or electrical."

Daisey says her Geometry in Construction class helped prepare her to take on this project.

"I learned a lot of things about safety and I learned some math that went along with it because everything boils down to some math, especially when it comes to building things."

Teacher Jay Sevier highlights the importance of community projects in student development.

“The fact that it’s a community service project gives the students a real sense of pride,” Sevier said. “They’re enjoying the work, and when it’s finished, I know they’ll be pretty excited about what they’ve accomplished.”
